Building a strong reading culture: St Rita’s College Library

We recently asked Head Librarian, Kathryn Schravemade and the team at St Rita’s College Library in Brisbane if they could share with us how they make their library space engaging and inclusive and build a strong reading culture within their school. Here’s what they shared:

What are the core values of your library?

Responsiveness, flexibility and community. The St Rita’s College Library supports and drives learning in an environment that provides users with responsive learning spaces, tools and expertise to assist skill-building, inquiry and learning in the Digital Age. Our library transcends the static notion of a traditional library by offering a multi-dimensional learning ecology promoting high quality skill development, collaborative leadership, responsive services and environments and community networks and partnerships. Services, staffing and resources offered by the St Rita’s library go beyond traditional notions of the school library to support and lead scholars in connecting, inquiring and developing both 21st Century and discipline-specific skills that underpin the QCAA Queensland Curriculum.

How do you ensure your library is an inclusive space for everyone?

We work hard to ensure that our spaces are welcoming and inviting for everyone. This means our displays and spaces constantly change to reflect the needs and interests of our users. We offer a variety of physical spaces for our users (individual, collaborative, formal and informal) as well as providing users access to many of our resources and services digitally through our library website. This means that users can access what they need in a space or format they are comfortable with however they prefer.

How do you support struggling-readers in your library?

We have built a strong reading culture within our school and this starts prior to the students completing their first day at the college. We hold ‘campfires’ with future students in year 6 to introduce them to our collection and staff and allow them to borrow over the Christmas holidays prior to their commencement at the college. This establishes the library as a place where students are comfortable when they commence at the college.

We also host our Read Like a Girl program (in partnership with Riverbend Books) that is open to our feeder students and the wider community. 

Our biggest Read Like a Girl event for 2019, our Remarkable Women conference, is happening on July 19th and we are very excited to be hosting a day-long conference featuring many fantastic authors.

We’re so impressed with your multiple Accessit Web App homepages. Could you give us any tips to making an engaging online Web App for students?

We recently changed to have only two Accessit Web App homepages, one for students and one for staff. We found this decision has allowed us to regularly update and easily manage the digital content. Our number one tip for engaging with students online is to create content that is eye catching and on trend, while remaining within your college style guide. Look at social media, Pinterest, other advertising material for inspiration. Canva is a great place to start creating your own graphics.

You do some wonderful displays in your library. Where do you get your inspiration for these?

We find inspiration from everywhere, for example, curriculum being studied, Pinterest, other staff members or just brainstorming in our ‘think tank’, also known as the library office. Our most interactive displays have been the Harry Potter display with the flying car photo booth.

Your library also has a strong social media presence, how important do you think it has been to keep engaging with your students online?

We believe strongly in engaging with our community beyond the confines of our physical space. Social media provides the perfect medium for us to do this. Our students prefer to follow us on Instagram as do many authors whereas, staff and publishing houses are usually more active on Twitter. We use social media to promote new resources, events and services and students who don’t tend to spend as much time in the library regularly come in to loan something that has caught their eye online.

Do you collaborate with teachers and the wider school community on library initiatives?

We work closely with teaching staff to assist them in resourcing their curriculum and building research skills with students. We also use the Accessit Web App as the ‘one-stop-shop’ for staff and students as they are able to search, access and reference all of our physical and digital resources in one place. This might involve curating quick lists or visual searches as a foundation for their research too.

Accessit Library Australia Roadshow 2019

Australia Roadshow 2019 - a great success!

This year the Accessit Library professional development Training Roadshow and Presentation Series series hit 17 Australian venues across 5 states.

Each year our professional development training sessions are well-attended by enthusiastic Accessit librarians, and this year was no exception. As Sue de Leon from Kew High School said, “The roadshow keeps me feeling on top of the latest updates and I’ve found there is no substitute for the face-to-face training.”

Attending the annual Roadshow strengthens the ongoing relationship between our Trainers and customers, and enables users to make use of every tool at their disposal to create a dynamic and engaging library. Librarian Kate Mowat from Langwarrin Park Primary School agrees: “Another informative roadshow generating new ideas to take back and improve the service we provide. Accessit continues to answer all the needs of our library today and for the future.”

We value your feedback

As you can see, each year we gather feedback from our customers on their Roadshow experience. Based on last year’s feedback, this year we chose to focus on new features, general tips and tricks and allow time for questions and answers and networking. Anne Chowne from Academy of Mary Immaculate commented that her training session was “Very well run, lots of new features explored, it was well paced and allowed time for audience members to question things along the way.”

This year, 92.4% of attendees said they would recommend the roadshow to other Accessit users; and 88.4% felt the roadshow was valuable to them personally – even those who were already confident users or have IT backgrounds. Vanessa Grosso from Kilvington Grammar School added, “This is my fourth successive Roadshow and I always come away excited with the new enhancements and pleased to have picked up some other tips and techniques to improve my current use. Will look forward to next year.”

Rewarding for our trainers

It’s just as rewarding for our team to see familiar faces and meet new customers each year. As Roadshow Trainer and Product Representative Bonnie Barr says, “It’s really special to catch up with people who are genuinely happy to see you and really value what Accessit Library brings to their school. The feedback on new functionality is great. We want to hear what you think so we can keep improving the system.”

For experienced Accessit Library support Trainer Christine Cross, it was her first time joining the Roadshow in Australia. Well versed in the New Zealand equivalent, she was excited to meet many Australian customers for the first time. “It was my first time attending the Australian Roadshow and my first time visiting Queensland at all! We were made to feel so incredibly welcomed by the schools who were hosting us, and it was wonderful to meet many of the customers we speak to on the phone, as well as brand new Accessit Library users. It was also great to see each library space in action. It really struck me how vital, dynamic and vibrant these libraries are,” says Christine.

We have morning and afternoon sessions during the Roadshow. Our morning sessions are our yearly professional development training sessions for current Accessit Library customers. Our afternoon sessions are free sessions for those who aren’t currently using Accessit Library, but would like to see it in action!

How to create an amazing online library presence at your school

The world has gone online and libraries must join the trend or risk being left behind. Building a strong online library presence creates buzz around your school library and a stronger patron-base – so let’s draw your students to it!

Create your library’s visual identity:

You might not be trained in marketing, but just for fun, ask yourself: Who are your borrowers? How old are they? What do they care about? What do they want to see/read?

For example, if you believe your library is a sanctuary for those who don’t fit in, you might decide to create the equivalent of a cozy online reading nook. You might theme your online platform with yellows, creamy whites and soft blues, and fill homepage with gentle images, inclusive quotes and a diverse range of recommended reads.

Create meaningful posts – do your research:

When creating new content for your library homepage, make sure it serves a purpose. Content dumping for no reason is never a good idea. If you need a place to start, draw on the Accessit Web App reporting tools to create analytics on what people are searching for in your library; the most popular searches, failed searches, the most borrowed items, and so on. Once you know how people are already using your library, you can start catering to their interests appropriately, or filling in the gaps to inspire your non-readers.

User Experience – modern, attractive and intuitive:

Consider the experience of reading the homepage. What information do students need to see? What information is currently most prominent? When considering the experience for the user, remember these simple tips:

1. Contrast the text and background: It’s good to consider the experience of someone with sight impairment or colour-blindness. Legibility is key, so don’t put light text on a light background or red text on a blue background.

2. Bigger news items are more prominent: It goes without saying that you can determine the hierarchy of news items by changing their size and position on a page.

3. Use complementary colour contrast: If blue appears in your Web App logo and banner, highlight other areas using complementary colours. Blues go nicely with oranges, yellows with purple, and so on.

4. Stick to a format: If you have chosen a particular font, stick to that font throughout your homepage. Using a number of different fonts might seem like a quirky idea, but in reality they appear disorderly.

Regular updates:

To ensure your online library remains a place people want to return to, make it a goal to keep your content up-to-date and changing regularly. Here are a couple of time-saving tricks to keep content fresh:

1. Reorder your news items. You don’t have to spend ages finding and creating new content – if you have quality content hidden at the bottom of your Web App, bring it up for air.

2. Post Twitter widgets. Linking to reputable Twitter feeds on your Web App is another way of displaying engaging content without additional work, as they literally update themselves.

Get seasonal with your library system homepage:

Accessit allows you to create multiple Web App homepages out of sight, and then pin them when you need to. This means you can work away on a special Halloween homepage for example, and put it in place just for the month of October.

A library system with a schoolwide reach:

Make sure that you encourage everyone in the school to use the Web App. It’s a valuable space to celebrate school news and an easy place for teacher/librarian collaboration to begin. Schools can even link their online library directly to the school website as a way for the wider community to keep up with what is going on in your school.

Believe in your online library platform. If you back the library by promoting a strong online library presence, others will learn to back you too.

Deepening Literacy Engagement

It’s undeniable that there’s a correlation between good readers and educational success. But far more important than educational success is the positive effect reading engagement has on children’s ability to empathise with the experiences of others, and the ongoing impact reading has on their general mental wellbeing.

In fact most recently, the Mental wellbeing, reading and writing (2018) report conducted by the National Literacy Trust in the United Kingdom proved that “children who are the most engaged with reading and writing (i.e. those who enjoy it, do it daily and have positive attitudes towards it) are three times more likely to have higher levels of mental wellbeing than children who don’t.”

The Director of the National Literacy Trust, Jonathan Douglas concludes, “Not only does a love of reading and writing enable children to flourish at school, but we now also know it can play a vital role in supporting children to lead happy and healthy lives.”

Of course, that’s well and good for those readers who are already eager and engaged, but as Accessit Representative Bonnie Barr suggests, “it’s much easier to keep a reader than create one.”

In researching the topic of reading engagement, I started to think about my own learning and engagement habits when I was a child. It’s true to say that anything I was forced to do, I despised. The areas I thrived in were, without exception, those that I discovered on my own. I noticed this idea coming up time and time again in my research on reading engagement.

Owning the learning experience

There seems to be common fear amongst parents that children who show no interest in reading should be worried about and given extra tuition. Similarly, there’s a fear that children who learn to read later will somehow miss out on important lessons or lose the chance to achieve literary greatness later in life. In a study conducted by Psychologist Dr. Peter Gray (2010) around children teaching themselves to read, Gray found that when children are motivated to read, they will read.

In other words, “Children learn to read when reading becomes, to them, a means to some valued end or ends”. A great example of this was one young girl who didn’t learn to read well until she was age 11. Her mother recounts, “One of the best things that came out of allowing her to read at her own pace and on her own initiative was that she owned the experience, and through owning that experience she came to realise that if she could do that, she could learn anything. We have never pressured her to learn anything at all, ever, and because of that, her ability to learn has remained intact. She is bright and inquisitive and interested in the world around her.”

There are two lessons here: first, children will learn when there is a motivation to understand. Everyone wants to be “in on the joke” or be as advanced as those around them. Second, in allowing the impetus to come from the child, you won’t risk draining their enthusiasm and desire to explore and learn.

In traditional schooling, the ability to read becomes the precursor to the ability to learn almost anything else. However, learning to read alone is not enough. As Kylene Beers says, “If we teach a child to read but fail to develop a desire to read, we will have created a skilled non-reader, a literate illiterate. And no high test score will ever undo that damage.” For this reason we need to use every tool in our toolkit to help create this desire to read.

Getting “in on the joke”

The motivation to be “in on the joke” could be one of your greatest tools for engagement. The great Russian developmental psychologist Lev Vygotsky (as quoted in Gray, 2010), suggested that “children develop new skills first socially, through joint participation with more skilled others, and then later begin to use the new skills privately, for their own purposes.” That general principle can easily be applied to reading engagement. Don’t underestimate the power of peer-to-peer or teacher-to-student book recommendations, book reviews and book clubs to encourage discussions and debate. With the Accessit Web App Circulation tool, you can become an itinerant librarian, visiting classes, reading extracts, encouraging discussion, and even getting involved with specific class projects.

“One thing that I’m proud about is that both my book clubs have students in them that are dyslexic and/or struggling readers. They’re often brought along by their more bookish friends, but they stay because they’re comfortable in the club and are able to read and discuss books at the level that is right for them.”

Equally important is ensuring the library is more than just the physical space. If you are struggling to engage and interest your students in your physical space, take the library to them! Pop-up libraries are a great way to get noticed and get books moving off the shelf (or off the trolley!).

Embracing technology

Making an informed decision

Shaney Crawford was at Tsukuba International School for three years before she became Principal in 2011. As a trained librarian, Shaney knew what she wanted a library system they could shape to their own unique requirements and that didn’t require them to buy into an entire company, “We didn’t want to get sucked into an ecosystem that it would be tricky to get out of,” says Shaney.

Having previously had no real library system, Shaney could look at all the systems on the market and make an informed decision based on what was genuinely best for their school and budget. “We chose Accessit out of all of the possible options that were available, as we weren’t tied to any particular brand or company.”

Starting from zero

The process of starting from scratch and inputting 10,000 volumes was no mean feat, and Shaney put a lot of time into supporting Ayumi, the school librarian, during these early days. “We had reservations about starting from zero. Ayumi wasn’t technically a trained librarian – but Accessit made it simple for someone who doesn’t have that background to catalogue new books. And it’s been great to be able to keep all our school resources in one place, including self-generated PDFs,” says Shaney.

“We also love the interface. It’s very dynamic, and it’s nice that you can move things around the way you want to and put engaging videos and links on the front page to make the library more interesting for the students.”

Aside from the features and usability, Shaney loves the fact that Accessit isn’t a running advertisement for itself, “Other than the URL you can’t even tell you’re using Accessit.”

Around-the-clock support

Support was always a key factor for Shaney. Having had experience with a school management system located only in England, she knew they needed to find a library management system that could serve their time-zone, “The fact that Accessit had support offices all around the world was actually one of the selling points,” says Shaney.

“The support at Accessit has been amazing. We give the team 15 stars out of 5. We would connect through Skype, and they would often check up on us to see if everything was going okay. We found the team very responsive and very receptive and they have done a wonderful job for us.”

“For a small school like ours, with one librarian, Accessit has allowed us to have a proper library in a very, very short amount of time. We are extremely grateful to Accessit, and I would, and do, recommend it to any school who is thinking of changing or adopting a new library system. We were very impressed with Accessit on paper, and having been through the past 3 years of implementing and using it, we have not a single regret,” says Shaney.
