Librarian Talk – Claire Bavister – Woodland Middle School Academy

Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Claire Bavister, school librarian from Woodland Middle School Academy about how she makes the most of Accessit Library.

“I have been a children’s librarian for about 6 years now. As to be expected, I am an avid reader of all fiction. Outside of work I enjoy running, going for long walks and meeting up with friends.”

Claire Bavister

School Librarian, Woodland Middle School Academy, UK

What character in a book has influenced you the most?

Hermione Granger.

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

Our library is the heart of our school. It is a very welcoming, cosy place to be. The children can relax on beanbags and settees surrounded by colourful posters and there are display boards highlighting their reading achievements. We use the Accelerated Reader program to ensure that all children in the school read regularly. We also have weekly library lessons to monitor reading and recommend new titles. We celebrate Harry Potter and Roald Dahl day by transforming the library into the respective themes. This is a huge event and the children love coming in on those days to take part in all the activities ranging from magic spells to treasure hunts.

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

The recent challenge I have faced is: How to get books to children during lockdown and before that, how to work with classroom bubbles.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

Accessit Library solved this for us. During the first lockdown, I got the Web App up and running which enabled the children to browse and order books. I was then able to place their order and deliver their books to their classroom. With our old system, we could not do this.

I also love that pupils can access the Web App at any time, from anywhere. This is a great way for me to communicate reading achievements, promote books and just include any relevant information I think they should know.

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

The click and delivery service is running very smoothly. It’s lovely to see how excited the children get when they hear the trolley rumbling towards their classrooms with the latest delivery of books. The children know they can order books whenever they like and know they will be delivered every day. When the books are returned, we use quarantine mode before putting them back into circulation.

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

I like that it is simple to use. I also like the immediate help and tutorials that are available in the customer portal.

The Web App is my favourite feature. It’s such a valuable tool to communicate with all the children and to keep up to date with new and exciting information.

How does Accessit Library support the academic outcomes of your school?

Accessit Library ensures that our ethos of whole school reading is maintained to a high standard by allowing us to regularly communicate reading achievements to teaching staff.

A lockdown success story

Claire is one of the many librarians across the UK that has used Accessit Library to overcome the challenges of lockdown. She has achieved this by continuing to offer reading materials and homework support for students and parents using our innovative Web App. Accessit Library also enables her to highlight the many online supports the school library brings to classrooms in the cloud.

Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where Librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Mary McGavin, school librarian from Fulham Prep School about how she makes the most of Accessit Library.
“I am the school librarian at Fulham Prep and have been for almost 7 years! I sort of fell into the role having originally started working at the school as a supply teaching assistant. I was asked to be based in the library and have loved my time there ever since. I enjoy travelling, both around London, the country and the world and have really missed it this year. During the first lockdown I took up cross-stitching and am still painstakingly working on the first quarter of a large scene! Last year I undertook a course in teaching children with specific learning difficulties. Despite COVID-19 making everything difficult, I was able to complete the course and am now teaching children on a one to one basis. I’ve found that it’s been really helpful with my work in the library too which is an added bonus! “
    Mary McGavin

School Librarian, Fulham Prep School, UK

What character in a book has influenced you the most?

I cannot pinpoint one character but the book that has influenced me and my role as librarian is ‘The Giggler Treatment’ by Roddy Doyle. It never fails to make even the most reluctant of readers laugh and reminds me that nothing is more important than reading for pleasure.

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

The library is in a large room in the middle of the school and it really does feel like the heart of the school. Last year, our library was transformed from a more traditional library will aisles of shelves to a tree-themed haven. We have a huge free-standing tree, a treehouse mezzanine area where the children enjoy cosying up on a bean bag with a good book and lots of snug-like areas. Aside from its appearance, I strive to make the library a welcoming environment, both for those who have already found the joy in reading and those who haven’t quite discovered it yet.

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

It has to be shutting the library to visitors in March due to the first lockdown and navigating a click and delivery service since term began in September.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

We moved our library management system over to Accessit Library during the summer which couldn’t have been more perfectly timed! It’s difficult to know how our library functioned properly before without the online presence it has now. It crucially has allowed the children to browse the library shelves online and continue to borrow books and get excited about reading.

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

Considering this current environment and its impact on the school, if we were still with our previous library management system it would’ve been impossible to allow the students to borrow books from the library. What we have now is a fully functioning click and delivery system – whilst it’s not the same as having the children browse the physical bookshelves, it has solved the issue and I can’t see how Accessit Library can make it any easier! One child even commented that the click and delivery service is better than Amazon.

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

I absolutely love the Web App – how you can curate it to suit your students, the events going on within the school and most importantly to publicise anything and everything book related. Gone are the days of putting up posters around school and the blu tack promptly being nabbed by small hands!

How does Accessit Library support the academic outcomes of your school?

It helps to set the children up with a love for reading, something they can talk passionately about when at interviews for their next school.

    A lockdown success story

Mary is one of many librarians around the world that has used Accessit Library to facilitate learning and supplementing online lessons during lockdown. She is what we call a ‘lockdown success story’ and is one of hundreds of schools operating the library as close to business as usual as possible thanks to technology.

Barker College is another lockdown success story. Read their story by clicking this link.

Librarian Talk - Poonampal Kaur - Sarah Bonnell School - UK

Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Poonampal Kaur, library manager at Sarah Bonnell School about how she makes the most of Accessit Library.

“I am the learning hub manager (library manager) and I love reading of course! I manage a very large space (learning hub LH) and like to mix traditional books with other multimedia as I strongly believe in reaching out to all types of learners. From home during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, I successfully set up an eLibrary for the whole school which became quite a complicated process due the age restrictions we use on some of our books.”

Poonampal Kaur – Sarah Bonnell School – UK

What character in a book has influenced you the most?

Oh, that is a difficult one. I think I will have to say Christopher Boone from ‘The curious incident of the dog in the night-time.’

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

Apart from the very modern layout and the amount of space it houses the latest PCs and iPads. I complement the physical books with periodicals, eBooks and audio books. I am passionate about providing material for all our learners of all abilities. I stock a range of material to help our girls make progress in their reading, be it A-level standard (we do not have a sixth form), picture or dual language books. I keep the students engaged with the LH and use the Web App to help me achieve this. I keep it updated so students enjoy the experience it provides. I also have Google Classrooms set up as LH support rooms where the students contact me with any queries of issues they may have about the LH. Our LH is also known to host WBD like a show at the London Palladium!

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

Without a doubt it has to be the operation of the LH since coming back after the school closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the students are not allowed to come to the LH, going to them and collecting and delivering books has been hard. Also, our students do not have school email accounts so contacting them about their LH queries has been difficult. Keeping students engaged with the LH is challenging as I do not see them as often as I used to so ensuring messages of any new LH developments reaches everyone, has presented further difficulties.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

The latest reservation and quarantine mode update worked well and has definitely helped set up my click and deliver service. Also integrating Wheelers into the Accessit program has helped to channel all borrowing in one area. Using the landing page as a point of getting notifications out to students has been useful.

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

Having means to tackle the issues through Accessit is always welcomed and implemented.

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

The ever-growing list of functions that allow me to get things done quickly!

How does Accessit Library support the academic outcomes of your school?

By helping us to provide interesting and innovating provisions for our learners.

Woman looking for books to promote your catalogue in a school library management system

How to promote your school library catalogue

Many librarians underplay the crucial role they have in promoting the school library catalogues they create. An up-to-date and engaging catalogue and library collection is enormously advantageous to teachers and students. It will enrich the teaching and learning experience by offering the wide range of media and resources that are required to succeed. Once the library catalogue has been built, it’s important that it’s promoted to the right people, in the right way.

This article provides actionable suggestions to promote your library catalogue to the wider school community.

A broad range of resources will appeal to a wide audience

Let’s start this with my favourite inspirational quote:

“If you build it, they will come” – Kevin Costner, Field of Dreams, 1989.

By having a wide range of resources in your catalogue, you will ensure that the library becomes the first point of call for all information and research needs. This means that your collection is consciously built for the many different types of learners within your school environment. So, it’s important to have a good, intuitive understanding of the teacher’s curriculums, and a ‘finger on the pulse’ of pop culture and modern technology.

For example, if the social studies teacher is covering elections, your library collection could offer a variety of different media types on the topic to appeal to your learners.

          This could include:

          • Series of articles demonstrating prominent people’s political leanings
          • Funny political memes in your Web App or on the walls
          • PDF infographics contrasting differences between policies
          • Biographies of current celebs that are openly political
          • Video links to key political moments
          • Quizzes to discover personal political leanings

By adding book trailers, author interviews, or related educational games to your catalogue records, you will encourage students to interact with the content in different ways.

This kind of wide-ranging catalogue of resources, catering for the needs of the diverse learners of today is at the very heart of a strong school library. Teachers will love being able to provide a customisable learning experience catering to their individual student’s needs, utilising the range of resources you have on offer.

There is a lot of wisdom in the quote, “If you build it, they will come”.

Promotion and visibility are key – try these suggestions

So, you’ve got a great school library collection, and you still need more engagement. This is your opportunity to use your marketing and promotional skills within the school. Schools have many ways in which you can promote your library.

          Most schools have:

          • A newsletter
          • Staff notices
          • Weekly assemblies
          • An intranet
          • A website
          • Social media pages
Each channel will have a different response and engagement rate, so you need to understand what your goal is. For example, if all the year groups within the school are studying elections in some form, then it’s a great opportunity to ask for your library election display to be publicised / promoted in the school newsletter.

Pro tip: Before going gung-ho, making noise in all of the various publications available, try your best to foster continued advocacy with staff members. This means engage in casual lunchroom conversations or send out a quick email to the relevant departments as your displays go live. The teachers will then do the work for you and tell their students to visit the library to get the relevant resources when they’re ready.

          Use technology to your advantage

Whilst promotion of your competitions, reading programs and literacy initiatives could be done through your school newsletter, website or even “live” at assembly, nothing beats having an attractive, interactive interface in your school library software to engage your school community.

Accessit Library is a fantastic piece of school library software that brings the school together to create a connected learning community. It has a bright, engaging interface called the ‘Web App’ that is managed by the library staff from anywhere with an internet connection.

Of course, the Accessit Web App is totally customisable. You can theme your dashboard, promote competitions, post news items, or even show off your latest resources with book carousels. If you have a learning management system at your school, you can tie it back to the library with live links to book lists, allowing teachers to create reading lists of books, eBooks, websites, electronic and video content.

With access to the catalogue anywhere, anytime, on any device, your students will see in real time the availability of items, and even participate themselves by reserving, ‘liking’ and reviewing resources. They can even create “to-read” lists and recommend books to their friends whenever they like.

Parents can also participate in their child’s learning. They can choose reading material with their children from the comfort of home and view their children’s borrower history to get a feel for their individual taste.

Accessit caters for the individual, allowing users to select their own favourite authors, subject areas, series and genresalerting them when new resources come in matching their interests. You can even catalogue and track your National Library loans, sending links of lists to the teachers, allowing them to see the availability in the library and to reserve them for their classes.

Technology really is your friend when it comes to promoting your catalogue.

Accessit has tools for the itinerant school librarian

With the right library management system, it’s no longer a challenge to promote your school library catalogue when you’re not at school all the time. With Accessit Library, you can be visible, no matter where you are. Having the ability to circulate from the Accessit Web App means that, armed with a device that’s connected to the internet, you can become a travelling librarian!

          Try these ideas:

          1. Visit classrooms and do book talks, and take the books with you, allowing students to issue them straight away. Accessit has a ‘self-issue kiosk’ app, enabling school librarians to implement click and collect and book delivery services to classrooms.

          2. Pop into the staffroom and collect staff picks, or specific resource recommendations that the teaching staff may like their classes to use. Armed with the right topics and recommended books you can populate your Web App remotely, ensuring your resources are getting the exposure they need.

          There are so many possibilities.

Third party integrations are easy to promote

“Content is King” – Bill Gates, 1996

Since the beginning of the internet, quality content has always been what defines a really good website. This same principle applies to school libraries. A thoughtfully curated library catalogue that makes the most of mixed media will make promotion easy, so it’s important to have the right school library software to facilitate 3rd party content providers.

Accessit’s Web App seamlessly integrates with third party providers. Once they’re up and running they are visible and can be sorted in the management app. A few of these online digital content providers and databases include EPIC, Wheelers, Accelerated Reader, ClickView, EBSCO, Gale, ProQuest, OverDrive and many more, with new content integrations being added all the time.

Accessit’s One Search makes searching easy for students. With One Search, students can simply click on the databases or websites they want to search through and it will take them to the site (log them in, if it’s subscription or EPIC content) and carry out their search, all in a single click. They can still use the limiters, and change their search if they need to, within their chosen databases.

With your Wheeler’s eBooks available directly from the Web App (without requiring a secondary login) and your other electronic resources sitting side-by-side with your physical books, Accessit really is a one-stop shop!

Content will always remain king, you just need to give the students the means to find it. If they can find it, they will promote it for you. Thanks Bill.

Let your data lead catalogue promotion decisions

A thoughtful library collection that has been built with strategic insight, collaboration and experience will be easy to promote. Sometimes, within your library collection there will be many old favourites that you think should be promoted, that really shouldn’t be. Data is going to help you here. Good reporting with data insights is going to help you understand what books in your catalogue you need to promote.

Accessit Library has extensive reporting options that are useful for making cataloguing decisions. You can track which authors or Web App searches are most popular, and which searches are not yielding results. You can even run reports on non-active borrowers allowing you to consider which resources may re-engage the student.

These reports can guide you when considering collection development, to alert you when other search terms need to be appended to resources, or even which topics/authors are popular so you can create vibrant displays.

Final words on how to promote your catalogue

In the 20’s, it’s hard to imagine a world without a good library management system to facilitate reading in schools. As literacy is directly correlated with success later in life, it’s up to you, the school librarian to promote your catalogue to the school and encourage a healthy reading culture. Start with a broad range of resources and then raise awareness via the school’s channels. Embrace technology and adopt a library management system that works for you. Build an exciting mixed media collection and use reports and data to drive promotional decisions. We hope the suggestions in this article will help you promote your school library catalogue to the wider school community.
