WAOTW Sydenham School Dashboard

Web App of the Week – Sydenham School

Web App of the Week is an award for outstanding users of Accessit Library. It’s a place to recognise good-looking, useful user interfaces and somewhere to turn to for inspiration.

This Week’s Web App of the week is awarded to Christine Joseph and Hannah Briscoe for their user-friendly, engaging, and interactive dashboard as well as their success with our new ‘reserve and deliver’ function during COVID-19.

Christine and Hannah have worked together to create an inclusive dashboard which students enjoy at their busy Library.

“Our students love it as it’s allowed us to create an engaging and interactive platform, offering not just information on books, but links to podcasts, author interviews, games and even a live link to a kitten rescue sanctuary. What’s not to love!”

Hannah Briscoe

Sydenham School, UK

The success of their beautifully executed dashboard with their students is shown through the colossal 17,000 books issued from Sydenham library in the last academic year before COVID-19.

While COVID-19 was a huge challenge for schools globally, Sydenham School was able to use Accessit in an innovative way to continue using their library. The ‘reserve and deliver’ function along with ‘quarantine mode’ enabled them to quarantine and deliver books to students throughout these difficult times.

WAOTW Sydenham School Dashboard
“We hadn’t expected it to be the success it has, with nearly 5,000 books being issued. It has certainly kept us fit and it’s worked so well that we will continue to deliver reservations once we open up again.”

In Accessit it is easy to create an attractive and interactive dashboard for your students to enjoy, enabling students to use the library whether they are at school or not.

Accessit Library is truly a whole school resource that enhances digital classrooms, allows parents to make book choices with their children and provides multitudes of reporting options to demonstrate reading progress to the SLT and OFSTED.

Librarians of Accessit – Sarah Pavey

Accessit is a library management system made by school librarians, for school librarians, and our series ‘Librarians of Accessit’ explores that dynamic of our team further. In this second edition, Sarah Pavey shares her own experiences of being a librarian and how Accessit makes a librarian’s life easier.
    |
AccessIt helps us by automating many of these chores and we can then spend more time liaising with our customers, researching what resources will be beneficial, supporting teaching staff in planning and delivering lessons, talking with senior leaders about how the library can have impact on the wider school goals and much more.

    Sarah P.

Where in the UK are you based?

Epsom in Surrey – home of Epsom salts and The Derby.

How long were you a librarian for?

I started as an information scientist, then moved into pharmaceutical market research and when my daughter was born, I worked for a firm of actuaries as a librarian before running away to school. I’ve been in school libraries for 21 years and have been working as an education consultant and trainer for 8 years.

What is the best part of being a librarian?

Where do I begin? I think, aside from being able to buy any book you want to read, it has to be the degree of autonomy that you have. Unlike subject teachers, you are not constrained by the exam syllabus or curriculum, and in fact, you need to develop initiatives that are “off piste” so you can use your creative and innovative skills.

When did you first encounter Accessit?

I was looking for a replacement for my current Library Management System and didn’t want to move to Windows. I had a phone call from a colleague in a close by school one afternoon who said, “the people selling the LMS software you want to buy are on their way to you and should be there in 15 minutes”. 15 minutes later, Martin and Julian burst through the door and the rest is history!

What is your favourite feature of Accessit’s?

There are so many to choose from. I am proud to see two of the suggestions I made up and running as part of the program. Firstly, the citation feature, which I suggested years ago and which began with a fairly rudimentary version of Harvard. The second was the browsing statistics.

I also love the PDF features and being able to upload the contents pages of journals or lists of poems in a poetry book without having to type it all out. But my favourite of all has to be Visual Search – it is so flexible and it is amazing if you are creative. I use it with bespoke subject headings so I can ensure all the relevant resources come up in one place for project-based learning. I would upload books, journal articles, videos, websites, databases and guides to research. Then, at the start of the project I would go to the classroom and show the teacher and students how to get to the visual search icon. Also, with the web reports it was possible to see the number of hits on the visual search and how much it was being used. We could also use the web messaging feature to make suggestions for additions or withdrawals from the list.

How does Accessit make a librarian’s life better?

There are so many features in AccessIt which take away the mundane chores, such as data input, circulation and chasing overdues. A librarian can save so much time by using z39.50. You can set up self-issue which allows for multiple approaches to searching. Or, you can upload “how to” videos which means that users can be more independent. Although these tasks are within our comfort zone, it is easy to spend far too much time hiding behind them to avoid doing something that pushes the boundaries, and which might have more impact on the school community. AccessIt helps us by automating many of these chores and we can then spend more time liaising with our customers, researching what resources will be beneficial, supporting teaching staff in planning and delivering lessons, talking with senior leaders about how the library can have impact on the wider school goals and much more.

What are the most rewarding things about being a librarian?

I was not only the librarian but also a tutor, which I believe helped me to get to know students better and encourage use of the library. I also spent a considerable amount of time teaching with subject teachers in the classroom, as well as the library. My main rewards were delight in watching students grow in self confidence in their approach to independent learning. At one school I was the “go to” person for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Extended Essay – teaching students about academic integrity and essay composition – it was so rewarding when they returned to school for a visit after starting university and saying how much they had put into practice there. Equally, I loved putting together initiatives for event days and getting the whole school community involved. I enjoyed watching them having fun at events like our live Cluedo game for World Book Day, naming the sea monkeys we kept in the library, trying to eat the fake biscuits we made as part of the ‘Christmas food around the world’ display competition (they had to find the real one) and smelling the essential oils on our ‘Stay calm for the exams’ display.

What is the strangest thing a student has ever said to? What is the strangest/funniest story from your time as a librarian?

I was the sole person on duty one summer Wednesday afternoon and the library was quiet because everyone was playing games outside. A short, rugged looking man wandered into the library with his son. They said they had an appointment to look around the school but there had been no-one in reception, so they were just looking for themselves.

In those days, GDPR and safety were not as high priority. They gave me their first names and I showed them around for about 20mins answering questions about the library and the school. I did think the man’s face looked a bit familiar, but with it all being a bit sudden and me being busy, I didn’t pay too much attention to it. At least, not until after they had wandered off and a small posse of students rushed into the library excitedly asking, “Is it true Mick Jagger and his son are looking around the school?”. It turned out Mick Jagger’s sister had been asked to book an appointment at the school, but accidently made it at the Further Education College which had a similar name. So, while the FE college were hanging out the flags in preparation, the Jaggers wandered unnoticed and unexpected into our school.

In your view, what are some important keys of school libraries and librarians?

School libraries and librarians have to support everyone in the school community. It is sad that in England the curriculum has driven many school libraries simply to be adjuncts of the English department and many have lost their cross curricular role alongside professional staffing. We need to develop collections that support all of the curriculum. As well, we need to balance the need for developing reading for pleasure and reading for information in whatever format is appropriate for the individual user. So, we need to be confident users of digital technology, skilled collaborators and communicators to work with staff and students but we also need to be familiar with the learning outcomes our users are seeking so we can direct them with impact. I know this is a bit controversial, but I have always felt that if a student is not a fluent reader by the time they are in secondary school, then they need specialist help from the special needs department or, maybe, English as an additional language. We can encourage reading to improve skills and to promote escapism, but essentially, we need to concentrate on the delivery of life skills for information literacy as defined by CILIP ILG in 2018 – ie. skills for Education, Health, the Workplace, Citizenship and Everyday Life.

How do you/would you encourage students to read?

I am not the best person to ask about this! I do read, but I am not a great fan of fiction. I do like faction books, but finding the time to sit and read at length is rare outside of holidays. However, I did use to enjoy getting students more engaged with reading through various initiatives such as interactive displays, talking about books, making scenes from books out of scrap or using apps such as 3D Paint and Bitmoji. I prefer active learning around fiction and was never comfortable with a silent reading lesson for a whole class of students. I am also a fan of reading aloud and this is something I would do if a teacher asked to hold a reading lesson in the library.

Many of the ideas I used for reading for pleasure, in the form of games, are available in my forthcoming book as well as other initiatives from around the world. The book shows how learning theory can be related to these activities. It will be published in September 2021: Playing Games in the School Library by Sarah Pavey.

For anyone who can’t wait that long, there is an online course available which complements the book on the School Library Association website – this is modular and is completed in your own time equating to a half day of training. You can find this here: https://www.sla.org.uk/course/game-based-learning.

If you would like to contact Sarah further, you can find her on Twitter @Sarahinthelib or visit her website www.sp4il.co.uk.

An introduction to using Social Media in your library

An introduction to using Social Media in your library

An introduction to using Social Media in your library

An introduction to using Social Media in your library

Social media users grow rapidly each day, including individuals, brands, companies, business of all sizes, and yes – libraries. So why and how are libraries using social media and how can you get your school library involved too?

Firstly, social media is a great way to communicate with your students. Ten ideas are:

      1. Invite them to comment
      2. Poll them
      3. Provide customer service
      4. Share student’s work
      5. Share popular culture news and other community news
      6. Encourage discussion of hyperlocal interest
      7. Share work life behind the scenes
      8. Spotlight popular books
      9. Set reading challenges
      10. Use hashtags to connect related topics and student interests

Secondly, it is time flexible. Techsoup (2017) investigated 311 libraries, finding that most didn’t spend a significant amount of time on social media yet 44% still posted daily, sharing pictures, posts about local events, educating people about services, highlighting collections and supporting other libraries.

Thirdly, as their trusted information provider, your students want to hear from you. A 2010 survey by the UK Society of Chief Librarians found that internet users trusted library staff with the sharing of information more than most other providers of online support – coming only second to doctors. A massive increase in unreliable information sources over the last decade is further reason for your students to rely on and trust your ability to share information. This suggests that content you share will be well received, especially if it’s related to what they’re studying.

It costs nothing, eliminating financial restraint, expanding opportunity and encouraging experimentation. There are also other school librarians doing the same, and social media itself allows you to collaborate with them and understand what works. When working collaboratively, you can keep your finger on the pulse of the reading and literacy world as a whole, keeping up to date with book reviews, popular books and upcoming releases as well as engaging with authors and other readers. This aids accurate decision making when selecting new resources, ultimately encouraging student engagement and improving their literacy skills. And finally, it’s fun! It is a great way to connect with your students and it’s easy to promote social media accounts on your Accessit Web App. We have a video to help you with this.

So which platform should you use?

There are many different platforms that your students use these days, so the best way to find out is to ask them directly. However, the most popular platform among teenagers is undoubtedly TikTok.

      TikTok

Tiktok is a music and video platform where you can create and share videos up to 60 seconds long. There is also the ability to add filters, reactions, duets, and the ability to stitch your video to another one. There is a #booktok hashtag where you will find many library-related accounts. Mrs. Pope’s library is a good example of an experienced TikTokker and elementary school librarian who posts fun and helpful content. You can also share news from the publishing world, like this. It’s easy to add a News Item to your Web App inviting students to follow you on TikTok, and you could set challenges here for your students. Their efforts can be ‘stitched’ to your original video, allowing others to view, comment and try it themselves – getting everyone involved.

      Twitter

Twitter is a platform that encourages conversation with the use of ‘retweeting’ and hash tagging related topics. A Twitter widget can be added to your Accessit Web App and will automatically add your new Tweets to the top, creating a live feed for your students. You can refer to the aforementioned video to help you set this up.

      YouTube

YouTube has oodles of video content for librarians, and it’s extremely popular among teens. Via your Accessit Web App, you can share book trailers, movie trailers, videos on related topics and other entertaining content like this. We also have a video on how to embed YouTube videos on to your Web App which can you watch here.

      Instagram

Several libraries in the US have found using pictures online to be a good way to entice users to the physical space in the library (Wilson, 2021). Instagram is centred around photos making it the perfect platform for this. You can share photos of what’s going on in your library such as new events, any current themes or simply showing students how the space can be used, like this. There is also the #BookFaceChallenge with over 100,000 posts, where people post a photo of a book cover image merging well with the real-life background.

      Daring Librarian Insta

The example above is from The Daring Librarian Instagram account.

And you can make it easy for your students to follow your Instagram account by linking it to a news item on your Accessit Web App.

And note, measuring effectiveness, managing user engagement and assessing audiences are common challenges when measuring the success of social media. However, in the environment of a school library you are surrounded by your audience, giving you a direct understanding of how your posts impact their behaviors and interests.

      You could:

      • See your library attendance grow
      • Hear conversations between students or hear from them directly
      • See an increase in new comments added by students
      • Receive entries for social media challenges
      • Identify which books are being issued and if they are correlated to with your posts

And dependent on your “know-how” with technology, you can use Facebook or Twitter analytics to measure success too.

Finally, while student engagement is the most valuable benefit for everyone involved, it isn’t the only positive outcome. Ultimately, using social media as a communication tool will make your job easier and your time worthwhile. It is a tool your students are already using, so use it to take your library to them and to bring them to you.

Web App of the Week – Denefield School

Web App of the Week is an award for outstanding users of Accessit Library. It’s a place to recognise good-looking, useful user interfaces and somewhere to turn to for inspiration.

This week, Bethan Lloyd, the librarian and LRC manager at Denefield secondary school and sixth form shares her versatile Web App packed with news items, resources, clubs, collections and links. She uses her Accessit Web App as a way to share recently reviewed books, exciting competitions, and to promote her Library and Games Club.

“I love the Web App. It’s so easy to use and adaptable for every school to personalise their dashboards.”
        Bethan Lloyd

        Denefield School, UK

While she is only new to using Accessit, it appears she has mastered the art of adapting the dashboards to fit perfectly for both her students and staff.

Denefield School Web App HomepageHer student’s dashboard focuses on a variety of resources from videos and links, to books, eBooks and free online classes, while her dashboard for staff promotes development recourses and informative videos on how they can better use the Web App to get more out of their school library.

“By having such a versatile Web App, I have been able to update news items regularly, easily promote specific resources or collections, provide staff resources, and with generating QR codes I can easily give students direct access to specific links.”

Bethan has a bright and colourful multifunctional space which she is proud to call her library. Since becoming the Librarian at Denefield School she has helped the library progress greatly by re-organising her non-fiction resources into the Dewey Decimal System, adding e-books and audio books to the schools catalogue, and starting a wonderful student Library/Games Club. She found Accessit has given her even more confidence in her library by making sharing resources with students and staff effortless!

“I feel much more confident in promoting the library and resources because it is so easy to ‘say everything is on this link, here’s the QR code!’”

For more inspiration, have a look at other Web Apps from the United Kingdom that have been featured in Web App of the Week:

Getting students involved in your school library

          Student involvment

Getting students involved in your school library

Regardless of the age of your students, actively involving them in the running of your library has multiple benefits. It can enhance reading engagement, help with developing a school-wide reading culture, provide students with leadership opportunities, and promote the role of your library within your school. Students like to be heard and will feel valued if you seek their opinions and then act on that information. After all, the students are your ‘customers’ so the library needs to be relevant and provide the things that they want, especially if you are trying to encourage them to be regular library visitors.

          Suggestions for collection development

Reading engagement can increase when students are able to make their own choices about which books that they read (Merga and Gardiner, 2018), so it makes sense for your library to have as many of the books that your students want as possible. Providing the books that your students ask for will also ensure that your school library collection is relevant and reflects the specific reading interests of your students.

          Try some of these ideas:

          1. Invite students to add books to your library’s wish list.

          • Cover a blank notebook in something bright and colourful and leave it in the library for students to write in their suggestions.
          • Designate a wall or board where students can add post-it notes or write their suggestions using white board or chalk markers
          • Create a simple Google form and share the link on your Accessit Web App and in other online teaching spaces.

This image shows an open book on the centre of a desk with the pages spread out. In the background is a book shelf filled with books.

          • Buy the books suggested by students as soon as possible – this will make them feel valued and important, as well as making you look super-efficient!
          • When the books arrive, make sure the student who suggested them is at the top of the reserve queue. In Accessit Library you can easily re-order the reserve queue if required.

          2. Talk to your students about what interests them.

          • Encourage students to add their favourite authors, genres, series, subjects and keywords into their borrower profile on your Accessit Library Web App, so that they can be automatically alerted to any new resources that match their interests.
          • Keep an eye out for books with movie and Netflix tie-ins and add the movie trailers to your Accessit Library Web App.
          • Find out if they’re into manga, audio books, graphic novels or high interest non-fiction – consider formats as well as content.
          • If a particular series is ‘hot right now’, encourage them to let you know when the next book is released (some students will make it their personal mission to keep you updated with expected publication dates!)

          3. Book buying can be one of the best parts of being a librarian, so let them share that excitement.

          • Consider taking a small group of students on an extra special outing to the local bookshop to help you select new library books, or let students help you with an online order.

          Conversations and recommendations

Talking about books enhances the social aspect of reading, exposing us to books we may not otherwise know about and motivating us to try something new. Not surprisingly, readers of all ages are most likely to read books that are recommended by friends. Many of us will have at least one or two reading friends whose opinions we value and who are the best and most reliable source for our next great read!

Try these ideas to get your students talking to each other about books:

            • Give students shelf talkers, bookmarks or post-it notes to attach to the books they have read with a quick comment or mini book review.
            • Encourage students to create book review videos and book trailers that they can upload and share on YouTube, and then add them to your Accessit Library web app Topic Boards.
            • Print out some “Read this – we think you’d love it” cards with a space for the student recommending it to add their name, then slot these into the books.
            • Encourage students to write book reviews in your Accessit Library web app. They might do this as a class activity, perhaps as an alternative to reading logs, or on their own just for fun!

This image shows an example of a resource record on the Accessit Web App. It displays a book cover with written reviews left by students.

            • Once you have a decent number of reviews in your Accessit Library Web App, set up a new carousel for recently reviewed books. This will automatically update as new book reviews are published and is a great way to showcase what students are reading.

This image shows an example of a carousel of books on the Accessit Web App which displays four book covers with the main one of a boy with a red backpack facing with his back towards us.

            • Set up an online book group for your students using Goodreads – you can also embed content from Goodreads into your Accessit Library Web App.
            • Consider buying multiple copies of popular books, so that students can read the same book as their friends at the same time and talk about their reading as they go along.
            • Create displays where students can share their favourite books. You could have a ‘Books We Love’ display where students add a post-it note with their recommendations, like this one on a library window.

This image shows red and white paper love hearts and the words “Books we love” in red on a glass door, looking out on to a lawn with bushes.

          • Use online platforms like Padlet and social media like Instagram for students to share the books they’ve enjoyed, then add the links to your Accessit Library Web App.
          • Play book trailers from your Accessit Library Web App on a big screen in the library during break times. Students will stop to watch and then share their thoughts with anyone else nearby who might be listening.

A space to feel at home

Give your students a sense of ownership by making them an integral part of the library space. Put their art and other work up on the walls (ask your teaching colleagues if they have anything suitable to display), get them to help create library displays, get their thoughts on the layout and find out what they like and what they don’t – then make some changes. The more your students feel a part of the library, the more they will enjoy being there and the more often they will visit!

Collection development starts with identifying existing gaps

Always consider where your collection gaps are well before budget submissions are due. Key decision makers are driven by what benefit students will gain from every dollar spent. By showing existing gaps, and how filling them will contribute to positive student outcomes you give yourself the best possible opportunity for budget approval.

Reporting functions in your school library management system are extremely helpful

Your school library management system will help you identify gaps in your collection.
          • Popular author reports are worth checking to make sure you have all works published and show where extra copies would be worthwhile.
          • Comparative reports across different age groups will show where engagement with the collection is lacking, or where a certain cohort is reading in a different direction.
          • High or low use usage reports will show you what is being used in your existing collection and what can be replaced.

          Collaborate with departmental heads

It’s always important to know well in advance what will be studied. If you have visibility of the school curriculum, you can make sure that your collection will support it. This is where it’s important to engage with departmental heads to get overviews of the year’s topics. If you have a general outline for the year ahead, you can better assess potential and current resource subscriptions.
Case Study: Le Régent College Library

          Leadership opportunities

Encourage students to be involved in the library as helpers, workers, advisors, technicians and ambassadors. Get to know your students so that you can identify those best suited to various roles within the library. Make a point of publicly acknowledging their efforts with badges, certificates, and increased responsibilities. You can download certificate and badge templates from the Accessit Library e-Learning Centre (ALeC). The library can provide a safe place for students to learn to lead and be role models, enhancing the position of the library within your school.

Involving your students will also help to raise the profile of your library within your school. The more students are given a chance to have a say and to be heard, the more they will value the library and see it as their place, becoming some of your strongest advocates and biggest supporters. As library visits and student engagement increase, so too will recognition of the important role that the library plays in supporting learning and student achievement within your school.
