Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where Librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Gabrielle Wales, librarian from Broadland High Ormiston Academy about how she makes the most of Accessit Library.

I am the sole librarian at this 11 – 16 academy. I have a complete passion for books and the plethora of advantages that students can reap from them. I love to instil a lifelong love of learning in my students and encourage them to question everything, even me. My greatest recent personal achievement is learning all the different ways I can use Accessit Library to reach and encourage my students to keep reading during lockdown.

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

My wonderful student librarians.

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

Keeping track of all the resources.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

Since migrating to Accessit, I now feel I have full control over my physical resources. Cataloguing is as simple as is the issue and return of books. It also allows me to show exactly where books are, for example on display, in a classroom or awaiting repair.

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

No more tearing my hair out trying to figure out where books are.

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

How easy it is to use right out of the box, and the constant stream of new uses I keep finding.

What tips could you give to librarians to help improve their remote learning experience?

When you are receiving online training just watch and listen. Don’t take notes they will only confuse you when you try to read them later. The training videos are so comprehensive and always available you can always check them out when you are attempting unknown tasks. You can also print out the lessons to use later.

I am absolutely loving the new YouTube add on for the Web App as it means I have more options than just adding a page using Source – so fast, so simple! Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where Librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Sally Baker, LRA Manager from Durrington High School about how she makes the most of Accessit Library.

I’m a high school librarian on the south coast of England. I love reading, music, movies, walking my dog on the beach and video games! I have a passion for music and drama and I’m one of the coordinators for The Amazing Book Awards, which is in its 10th year with 30+ participating high schools involved and 600+ readers engaged!

If you were a superhero, who would you be?

Batgirl (or maybe Black Canary…) as Batgirl is the patron saint of Librarians!

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

Our personalised service aims to ensure we help students find the right book for them to develop their love of reading. I champion graphic novels and have a HUGE manga collection that students help me keep up to date (and appropriate!) I don’t stop them from reading things that they want to. Year 7 are surprised that I “allow” them to read Diary of Wimpy Kid/Tom Gates etc. as they were taken from them at junior schools.

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

We had TERRIBLE library management software, then I found Accessit! However, when I was new to Accessit, I was struggling with getting the SSO to work correctly.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

After lodging a support request online via the helpdesk, Dom called to talk it through. He helped me work through it so that I was able to find the solution to ensure all was working securely and safely. We now have our students and staff accessing the web portal with no issues!

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

I knew we’d get it sorted, but I had no idea that it would be that prompt, clear and well resolved. Dom made sure that I was happy with the results and encouraged me to come back to the team with any query/issue that they can help with. All the assistance/support team have been brilliant when I’ve needed their help so far.

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

The Web App/portal for students, staff and parents’ access to the system. Hopefully this way we will be able to engage a wider audience and promote our resources in a more exciting way. It’s also clear and professional looking, and it actually DOES what you want to it to, not just look pretty!

What tips could you give to librarians to help improve their remote learning experience?

Use the ALeC distance learning modules to help learn and revise functions. It’s full of great info.

Web App of the Week: Harmony ISD

Web App of the Week is an award for outstanding users of Accessit Library. It’s a place to recognise extremely nice-looking, useful user interfaces and somewhere to turn to for inspiration.

This week’s Web App is simple and effective, designed to promote library citizenship and literacy.

When discussing what gets students at Harmony ISD reading, Lori Davis says having a user friendly interface helps immensely.

“A challenge we face is getting patrons to use the catalog. Our previous catalog was quite dull and looked almost like an early DOS system. Students felt that it was clunky and didn’t want to use it. Accessit’s Web App makes searching the catalog MUCH easier. There are book cover images, thorough summaries, reviews, etc. without a huge extra fee just to display images.”

Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where Librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Barbara Krainik, school librarian from Burgundy Farm Country Day about how she makes the most of Accessit Library, particularly with the younger children.

I like gardening for wildlife (planting indigenous species that are used by the birds and pollinators), traveling to beautiful places, reading and my cats.

If you were a superhero, who would you be?

Catwoman!

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

Well, for starters, it is in an old, repurposed barn :-). We have to meet the needs of 4-year olds to 14-year olds in one library, so we have a lot of different sections for books.

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

A constant challenge is building student’s independence in searching for and finding the books they want.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

The catalog is so user friendly for the kids. The layout of the catalog and how the filtering works makes it so much easier for kids to use!

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

Well, I think that younger kids are able to have more independence, especially when the visual search was completed.

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

EVERYTHING!!! It is so customizable. I love the landing page for students. I can add and remove various content so easily. I love how easy it is to manipulate and edit catalog records in the background. There are so many features. I also really love the customer service. Anytime I have needed support they have been really responsive, even making changes to the system to make something work better for me.

What tips could you give to librarians to help improve their remote learning experience?

Oh wow, I think it’s helpful to offer multiple modalities for students to access your lessons and your online library. I try to give students choices, such as post a flipgrid video or post to padlet or share a document with me when they are responding so they don’t have to do something they aren’t comfortable with. I’ve been having students write reviews in the library catalog as one of their remote options! I use screencastify to record short instructional videos on how to use the catalog to write reviews and make lists.
