Librarian Talk – Jason Saikaly – Barker College

Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Jason Saikaly, teacher / librarian at Barker College, NSW about how he makes the most of Accessit Library.
“I have been a teacher librarian since 1997. Between 1994 – 1996, I was a classroom teacher (English and History). I have been head of library services at Barker College since 2013. It is a fantastic job, and I am blessed to work with 7 other teacher librarians and support staff in the libraries. I love reading. My favourite genres are crime, mysteries and thrillers. I love running (half-marathons, marathons and trail running), detecting (gold, coins, jewellery, beachcombing), going to garage sales and I’m happily married with 3 amazing children (18, 12 and 4).”
Jason Saikaly

Teacher Librarian, Barker College, NSW, AUS

What character in a book has influenced you the most?

Atticus Finch from ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. Through his words and actions, he demonstrated to his kids what it means to be a person of character and integrity. He taught Jem and Scout to judge people for who they are, and what they do as opposed to what they look like. He is a class-act character!

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

It is a very large library. We actually have 3 libraries on campus and I reside in the senior library. One of the somewhat unique things we have tried to implement in the library is a traffic light system. We understand that the library can’t, and shouldn’t, always be a quiet place of study. As the heart of the campus, we want our patrons to come to study and also to socialise, rest, relax, unwind, interact and to explore, etc… It’s hard trying to please everyone, so we set up a traffic light system across 3 of the library floors. One of the floors is our RED floor. It is used for silent, dedicated study and reading. One of our floors is the ORANGE floor. It is used for quiet study, quiet group work and reading. The other floor is our GREEN floor. It is used for social interaction, watching TV, playing chess, reading the paper or magazines, listening to music (with headphones), watching YouTube or just being. The beauty of the system is that most students know, before entering the building, which floor they intend to be on. The senior library is open Monday – Saturday and is also open in the evenings.

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

Remote teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s the common challenge in 2020. The specific challenge was helping our community (2,000 students, 300+ teachers and parents) know how to easily access, and use, our online resources from their homes. We also teach a reading program, BookBites, to 32 English classes per fortnight and we wanted these to continue remotely.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

We used the Accessit Web App and some of Accessit’s features to solve our challenges. On our library homepage we uploaded some training videos (recorded in Canvas Studio) for our patrons to access. They include how to videos on ClickView, accessing online databases, accessing Flipster, borrowing eBooks and audiobooks, etc… In addition, we also made great use of Accessit’s One Search to connect OPAC searches to books, newspapers, eBooks, audiobooks, online encyclopaedias, YouTube, the State and National Library, and selected educational websites. Accessit made it very easy for us to continue as close to ‘business as usual’ as we could.

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

I think the greatest attitudinal change has been that now that we’ve come through the first wave of COVID-19, we’re confident that if the need arises again, we can manage another extended period of remote online teaching and learning. Another benefit was that we’ve had the chance to review some of our practices and traditional ways of doing certain things and identified areas for improvement, evolution or redundancy. It was a good chance to audit what we do and how we do it. A blessing in disguise!

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

Two things:

  1. It works seamlessly with our learning management system (Canvas) and our video database (ClickView).
  2. I love One Search. We have connected 9 external sites to the OPAC, so it has become in the majority of cases, a one-stop shop for the staff and students.

How does Accessit Library support the academic outcomes of your school?

For me, the greatest advantage is One Search and the fact that Accessit works with so many other educational sites and products. In many ways, it is the portal to the majority of the educational applications, services and resources available to our community of users.

How to approach collection development in school libraries

    Collection development in school libraries

How to approach collection development in school libraries

The way we build our library collections has remained fundamentally the same over the years. Entering the 20’s, we have almost infinite library collection options through mixed media formats and new subscription-based services. Despite our fortunate situation with seemingly unlimited resources available to us, collection development in practice remains in the status quo.

This article talks about mixed media collection development in school libraries and makes actionable suggestions for school librarians to work with.

    Build a collection development plan

We often fight hard for our budgets. So, it is with utmost care that we try to make the best use of them to benefit our students. A collection development plan will give you a lens into the future that will help you understand where you need to spend.

Making sure you populate and then stick to (and adapt if necessary) a collection development plan is essential as it informs purchase decisions, ensuring your school library has the best resources for your students.

A great way to create a thorough collection development plan is to consult students and teachers. With surveys, face-to-face class visits and presentations at department meetings, you can gather lots of information. This data will help you understand what your users find valuable and what they would like you subscribe to and purchase. Remember, experience is great, but always be open minded; what is popular and well-used in one school won’t necessarily be the same in another- listen to the needs of your users.

There are many excellent survey and presentation providers available for free online.

Collection development starts with identifying existing gaps

Always consider where your collection gaps are well before budget submissions are due. Key decision makers are driven by what benefit students will gain from every dollar spent. By showing existing gaps, and how filling them will contribute to positive student outcomes you give yourself the best possible opportunity for budget approval.

Reporting functions in your school library management system are extremely helpful

Your school library management system will help you identify gaps in your collection.
    • Popular author reports are worth checking to make sure you have all works published and show where extra copies would be worthwhile.
    • Comparative reports across different age groups will show where engagement with the collection is lacking, or where a certain cohort is reading in a different direction.
    • High or low use usage reports will show you what is being used in your existing collection and what can be replaced.

    Collaborate with departmental heads

It’s always important to know well in advance what will be studied. If you have visibility of the school curriculum, you can make sure that your collection will support it. This is where it’s important to engage with departmental heads to get overviews of the year’s topics. If you have a general outline for the year ahead, you can better assess potential and current resource subscriptions.

Digital content collections – practical tips

There are many reasons why digital resources are so popular in modern library collections. Digital resources are easily accessed from home through your library management software, they take up much less space in the library and they can be used as an interim resource during curriculum trial periods.

Books are expensive, and they’re permanent. When a departmental head passes the note that they’re trialing new subject matter for the year, sometimes the best option is to purchase a digital subscription for a year. Rather than purchase the physical books and find the trial has ended unsuccessfully a year later, leaving you with unusable inventory; you can simply discontinue the subscription.

Here are 3 tips for handling digital resource subscriptions:

    1. Check if the digital resource provider has promotional material that you can download. This will save you time making informational material to give to your students. It will also increase usage and raise the profile of the resource.

    2. Keep an eye out for digital content providers who are offering free trials of their products. If you time it to coincide with a research project you will be able to see if the students find it useful or not, without committing funds to it first.

    3. Remember to use the reporting functions in your school library management system to show usage statistics of digital content. You can’t ‘get a feel for’ digital resources like with book check-outs. The only way to know for sure is to see usage statistics and pick trends.

The other side of collection development

Collection development is more than just what you put into your collection, it’s also what you take out. Weeding out unused, dated and damaged resources gives you more shelf space for your new purchases. It also ensures your students have access to quality materials.

Unfortunately, weeding isn’t a Marie Kondo-esque experience where you decide if the books spark joy for you. Books always spark joy for librarians! Weeding can be difficult and can be a cause for anxiety, so use data from your library management system to drive the decision.

The basics: data hygiene – it helps with circulation

If you look at the resources that aren’t being used, and feel that they should be, try the following:
    • Check the metadata and ensure the data is complete
    • Make sure the book is still relevant in the school curriculum
    • See to it that the books are easy to find
    • Ensure the appropriate tags are applied in your school library system

At the end of the day, just because a book looks good, or is still in great condition and has good bibliographic data – if it no longer fits in your collection, it may be time for it to go.

A note about student search habits

There is no greater missed opportunity than a fantastic resource that is left to gather dust. As mentioned above, without logical and complete bibliographic data, students may have difficulty in finding the resources. Students won’t always use the best search terms though, because they’re students. So, look at the records and learn if what you currently have in the bibliographic record is helping or hindering. Try using tags or keywords to mark resources as part of a specific study topic. Tags and keywords are an effective way to get resources into the hands of those who need them the most.

To get students attention, it’s also worth considering promoting your catalog in different ways.

Remove large series that take up shelf space

In some instances, you may be able to move some items into the stacks if you have them. Sometimes big series’ can wreak havoc on your shelf space. So, consider only having the first few books in the series on the shelves, and the rest stored somewhere easily accessible. This tip is useful if the series isn’t popular, but still getting some use.

Collection development - always a work in progress

Collection development is an ongoing project which is often driven by budget. It needn’t be daunting to reinvigorate your collection, just give yourself plenty of time. And of course, check in with your professional networks. Your colleagues may have success stories to share which can make the process of collection development much easier.

Web App of the Week – Thornbury High School

Web App of the Week is an award for outstanding users of Accessit Library. It’s a place to recognise nice-looking, useful user interfaces and is somewhere to turn to for inspiration.

One of the challenges that Thornbury High School has is organising a collection of 20,000+ titles. Accessit has enabled them to bring more books to display than they have ever been able to with multiple genre led carousels spread through their Web App layout.

They also have an impressive digital collection of resources that sit front and centre in their Web App.

“Accessit Library has enabled me to wrangle what is a very large school collection and make it more organised. That’s got to be a librarian’s dream, right?”

Liz Campbell – Head Librarian – Thornbury High School, AU

When asked whether Accessit has helped with academic performance at Thornbury High School, Liz says:

“Accessit helps us get students reading more and researching more easily which is what the library is really all about.”

Librarian Talk – Lynn Swannell – Mount Eliza Secondary College

Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Lynn Swannell, Librarian at Mount Eliza Secondary College, Victoria, about how she makes the most of Accessit Library.

I am the Librarian (and only library staff member) at MESC where I have worked for 32 years. During this time I have seen many changes within not only my library, but also school libraries in general. I work with a wonderful group of staff within the college who fully support the library. I also have a volunteer student library team who help promote reading and the library by setting up displays and contributing to library news each day.

My role involves being the VASS Administrator, and I am also the SLAV Convenor for my local network and a member of the SLAV Council, as well as Administrator of the ClickView Exchange Google Group.

At home I enjoy pottering about in my small garden and watching it grow, cooking and especially sharing brownies with my student library team, together with walking and exploring new trails with friends. Last year I spent 8 weeks travelling through the UK and Europe catching up with family and friends. I particularly love reminiscing about these memories during this current climate of being at home. A real highlight of the trip was a Rod Stewart concert I attended.

        Lynn Swannell

Librarian, Mount Eliza Secondary College, Victoria, AU

What character in a book has influenced you the most?

Mary Poppins. She is sensible and firm when needed and always caring about others and ready to have fun.

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

Our library is open every day from 8.00am to 4.00pm and whilst we do not have a large space, we certainly try to fill it with lots of colour and spaces for all to enjoy. Students love seeing our displays put together by the student library team and our annual ‘Book Lovers’ week to start the year is always a highlight. Classes are booked in on a regular basis and this enables me to talk about new resources, conduct ‘academic honesty’ sessions, and generally assist with research tasks. I love having this interaction with classes and at both recess and lunchtimes I try to spend time talking to students and ensuring it is a space they enjoy visiting.

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

Giving students access to our library catalogue and online resources outside of the library had become important however funding was not available until this year. We had been using the same system for nearly 20 years and it was certainly not ‘user friendly’ anymore. I was also looking for a way to engage students when searching for resources and a library management system that would integrate a variety of online resources as well.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

We migrated to Accessit Library in April 2020 during our first ‘remote learning’ phase, and I was able to coordinate this and the online training with help and guidance of both David and Cynthia at Accessit. This has now made our whole collection accessible whether in school or at home. Being able to customise the Web App and provide links via ‘One Search’ has also opened a whole new library world for our students.

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

I’m so glad that the migration was done earlier than planned and that I was lucky enough to be able to showcase our Web App to students and staff when they returned to school last term (just in time as well before going back to remote learning again this term). This has meant they now have access to a lot more resources and as I was also able to fit in a quick stock take of the main library collection I know that our catalogue is now accurate and up-to-date for our users to search.

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

I love how easy it is to use, both at a manager and a user level. Being able to easily update the Web App ensures student engagement – check out our ‘Pawsome Reads’ by students and their pets – really the sky’s the limit on your imagination with this. Whilst I still have work to do on this (it is only 4 months old) I really enjoy looking at other Accessit Library Web Apps, together with learning and sharing ideas via the Facebook group. The Knowledge Base video tutorials are fantastic and the ALeC tutorials have enabled me to learn so much about the system in a very short time.

Each librarian has their own unique perspective of life in the library and how they use library software to manage their library systems.

Librarian Talk – Wendy Wright – Avonside Girls' High & Shirley Boys' High

Welcome to Librarian Talk, the place where librarians get to talk about their roles, their unique situations and how Accessit Library has helped them. This week, we speak with Wendy Wright, Library Manager at Avonside Girls’ High & Shirley Boys’ High about how she makes the most of Accessit Library.

I’m a Library Manager with 14 years’ experience. I started at a small country school in North Canterbury converting their library from a card catalogue system to a computerised library management system with support and training from Services to Schools.

I live on a small farm and love country living with all the pets and opportunities it provides.

Last year I had a wonderful achievement with my new library team of Imogen Loakman and Louise Reichwein. We merged two separate school libraries into one shared space for two schools. This involved a huge amount of interaction with two sets of school management teams and Accessit, developing its library management system to work for our unique use case.

          Wendy Wright

Library Manager, Avonside Girls' High & Shirley Boys' High, NZ

What character in a book has influenced you the most?

Dibs from “Dibs in search of self”, an older book that tore at my heart.

Tell us about your library! What makes it unique?

My library serves grades 5-12 and it is gorgeous. It has a lot of windows, so it is always easy to tell what the weather is outside. The metal roof lets us know how hard it is raining, too. We have a lot of books, over 25,000, with a smallish student population. I feel really lucky to be able to work in such a resource rich, beautiful space. (I miss it terribly during quarantine.)

Wow everything, my awesome staff Imogen and Louise make it very unique. A lot has been asked of them in the last 12 months! Everything is new, systems, timetables, school cultures and collections etc.

We work in New Zealand’s first co-sited school library, accommodating two single sex schools that have shared common spaces, one being our Māpuna library. We merged two separate schools’ collections into one with the ongoing challenge of reporting to each school separately using gender or virtual groups.

This has meant we have had a close relationship with Accessit technicians and had them on speed dial especially in the first few months, we asked a lot of them and their library management system due to our unique situation.

What is a challenge that you faced in your library recently?

Reporting has been a challenge as not all reports can be picked by gender. It’s very important we can offer both schools their own unique data sets.

We are considering a curb-side drop off and pick up of requested materials.

How did Accessit Library help you solve this challenge?

The help desk using the fantastic Team Viewer option talked us through using vertical groups for the reporting to get the exact data we required.

How has your attitude changed towards the challenge you solved with Accessit Library, now that you’ve worked through it?

We have gained confidence and can now offer both schools the data they require. A huge relief that it was actually an easy fix once we tapped into the knowledge of the Accessit Help desk.

What do you like the most about Accessit Library?

We love Team Viewer and the confident team member who is on the other end of the phone, showing us a way to resolve our issue.

I also love their ability to hear us and our issues and sometimes just say we actually are not sure how that could work, but we will talk to our development team and get back to you and every single time they did, with a solution.

How does Accessit Library support the academic outcomes of your school?

We can quickly identify our popular titles and use that info to build the collection, thus increasing the reading of our students by providing similar popular text.
It also allows us to be very efficient in managing the departments textbooks for both schools so they can confidently be issued to students for extended text assessments.

Here are stories from other New Zealand librarians making the most of their school library software that may be of interest to you:
