Web App of the Week: Environment Day & World Oceans Day

Last year we created our World Environment Day themed dashboard to showcase your ‘green streak’ and share an educational message about the environment with your students.

This year, in continuation of World Environment Day, we also encounter World Oceans Day and thus decided to merge the two.

Now, not only can you and your students learn more about the environment and ‘be green’ together, but you can also ‘be blue’ – in a good way.

This Web App provides:

interactive games,
ocean themed designs and
fun facts about sea creatures, so your students can learn about and share the love for our ocean and the amazing creatures that inhabit it in a fun and engaging way.

Web App of the Week is an award for outstanding users of Accessit Library. It’s a place to recognise nice-looking, useful user interfaces and is somewhere to turn to for inspiration.

This week, Renee B. Chevallier, Head Librarian at Ursuline Academy of Dallas has given us her wonderfully adorned Accessit Web App. A distinctly ‘library’ themed Web App brings the bookshelves into the digital world, providing a welcoming and homely aesthetic.

Serving over 800 girls from the 9th to 12th grades, The Beatrice M. Haggerty Library has allowed students to access their catalog in person and when they are at home. When asked about the dual physical library and digital learning access to their catalog, Renee said:

“The user-friendly interface helped to bridge the gap of distance experienced by many of our students and it allows for other methods of outreach that will continue to draw our students into the actual library space once we are fully back on campus.”

The librarians have incorporated multiple carousels, dual Twitter feeds and multiple book synopsis to engage their library users.

When asked what she like the most about Accessit Library, Renee said:

“The customer service and training. They’ve been stellar.”

Accessit Library is truly a whole school resource that enables students to use the library at school, in the classroom or at home.

Web App of the Week is an award for outstanding users of Accessit Library. It’s a place to recognise nice-looking, useful user interfaces and is somewhere to turn to for inspiration.

This week Claire Bavister marvels us with her mastery of library communication. Woodland Middle School Academy’s Web App is a highly functional message board, as well as a comprehensive catalogue that can be accessed by pupils anywhere with an internet connection.

Claire has also built a functional click and delivery service that enables children to order books from their classroom, which the library then delivers. This saves the school unnecessary contact and helps keep the children reading in the classroom and reading for pleasure.

“During the first lockdown I got the Web App up and running which enables the children to be able to browse and order the books. I was then able to place their order and deliver the books to the classrooms. With our old system we wouldn’t have been able to do this. I also love the fact that pupils can access the Web App at any time, this is a great way for me to communicate reading achievements, promote books and just include any relevant information I think they should know.”

When asked what she likes the most about Accessit Library, Claire says:

“I like the way it is simple to use and the immediate help that is available through the customer portal. I also like the tutorials you can access through the customer portal, and ALeC, Accessit’s eLearning Centre.

The Web App is my favourite though as it’s such a valuable tool to communicate with all the children and to constantly update with new and exciting information.”

There’s no shortage of information on Woodland’s Web App, that’s for sure.

Woodland Middle School Academy has chosen an information rich approach when setting up their Web App. There are so many other ways that you can use your Web App too. That’s what makes Accessit Library so dynamic, user friendly and appealing to pupils, teachers, and librarians alike.

Accessit Library is truly a whole school resource that enhances digital classrooms, allows parents to make book choices with their children and provides multitudes of reporting options to demonstrate reading progress to the SLT and OFSTED.

Web App of the Week is an award for outstanding users of Accessit Library. It’s a place to recognise nice-looking, useful user interfaces and is somewhere to turn to for inspiration.

This week we are focusing in on Sarah Bonnell School’s World Book Day themed Web App. For those readers that don’t know about World Book Day, here is some information about it, taken from their website:

“World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading. Our mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.”

Sarah Bonnell School’s World Book Day themed Web App is comprehensive and engaging. It has reading challenges, multiple twitter feeds, promotional banners, and features book recommendations from their librarians.

Like all schools in the United Kingdom, Sarah Bonnell has adapted their library to assist home learning. They’ve subscribed to 3rd party content suppliers such as Wheelers eBooks and set up a new click and delivery service. When asked how Accessit Library helped them with this, Poonampal said:

“The latest reservation and quarantine mode update worked well and has definitely helped set up my click and deliver service. Also integrating Wheelers into the Accessit program has helped to channel all borrowing in one area. Using the landing page as a point of getting notifications out to students has been useful.”

Sarah Bonnell School also uses Accessit Library to support lessons through Google Classrooms.

“I have Google Classrooms set up as learning hub support rooms where the students contact me with any queries of issues they may have about the learning hub.”
